Back to my original point: Are suicide rates for poor folks around the world lower because of their level of religious commitment? Wherever you find poverty in the world, you'll probably find a priest not far behind. Selling merchandise in Quito's streets teeming with traffic with a sickly infant clutching at your breast is infintesimly more miserable an existance than I and most Americans will ever have it.

Maybe it's not the level of comfort we seem to think it is. Uncle Fester gets a rack for pointing out that the grass isn't greener once you get there.

My take:
Us doc's have a high rate of suicide as I understand it...in fact I had a med school class mate the was a wealthy anethesiologist......he OD'ed.
My pulpwood hauling friends are relitively poor....but little stress and things to bother them....I am constantly fighting stress and in fact take welbutrin for it. Most of the problems I see in clinic have a stress factor. I think the more successful you are , the more is expected of you= more stress=(more "bad" chemical releases)=more likely to decompensate and ultimately get away from it all.

Invictus, judging from the tone of this thread I guess it might be a good time to clarify something, something I thought I'd made clear in the first post.

In no way was I seeking suicide, either actively, passively, consciously or unconsciously. I was on those train tracks because they were what was available once my greenbelt walk way came to a dead end. I took the tracks because they were the quickest route to lunch. While I was on the tracks I was thinking light hearted thoughts of SRV and......pussy!!

I wasn't depressed, and I wasn't seeking any dark solace. The thought of letting that train rag doll me came to me in a flash and it was dispelled in a flash.

Why that thought came to me, hmmmm, I guess that might be worth considering. (I tend to think it's because of the sick snuff videos a co-worker at work pulls from the internet and shows us, one of which was a woman accidentally stepping in front of a train and getting hip checked into a different state...I also think I'm just an idiot some times...)

Have I ever thought of suicide in my life? Yep. Guilty.

Should I have been thinking such stupid thoughts?

I was very, very sick once, and had a choice whether to live or die. Sure, the medicines helped, but there was a time that I could have simply let go, and I would have died.

I wasn't afraid to do so, especially after I saw, or experienced it, so closely. No, I did not see a bright light or any long-dead relatives, but I did communicate with someone or something. It just wasn't my time then; but whenever that time comes, that will be fine, I'm actually looking forward to it.

"Death" refers to this physical body we are trapped in, but something continues thereafter.
